The Club World Cup debuts a new format and its winner could rub their hands together and earn a fortune
Real Madrid is preparing to compete in the final stretch of the season, which this year will conclude much later with the Club World Cup being played in the middle of summer. A tournament that has been reformatted by FIFA after also bringing back the Intercontinental Cup.
In this regard, FIFA confirmed this Wednesday the distribution of revenue from the Club World Cup, and the winner of the competition could pocket around $125 million (€120 million). This is the largest prize money for a club football tournament with a maximum of seven matches.
The new World Cup will have 32 participating clubs, and there will be two criteria for distributing the money. On the one hand, $486 million will be awarded for participation and based on sporting and commercial criteria. The minimum will be 15 million for each team.
Furthermore, as clarified by FIFA, each club will receive more money based on their contribution. Parameters related to global fan base and the tournament’s commercial value will be taken into account. This is the standard revenue per win in each match, the same for all clubs, for a maximum of seven matches in the tournament.
In the group stage, each team will earn €1.8 million for a win and €450,000 for a draw. Reaching the round of 16 will earn €6.9 million; reaching the quarterfinals will earn €12.2 million; reaching the semifinals will earn €19.5 million; the runner-up will earn €27.9 million, and the winner will earn €37.2 million. For participating, European clubs will earn between 11.9 and 35.5 million euros, South American clubs 14.1 million euros, and the rest 8.8 million euros.
Furthermore, FIFA has reiterated that it will not receive any funds. Similarly, the institution headed by Gianni Infantino has pledged to distribute approximately €230 million to club football worldwide, a solidarity figure that will be determined by the commercial success of the competition, which will be played in the United States between June 13 and July 14.
