UEFA’s Disciplinary and Ethics Committee is investigating Real Madrid’s conduct in the Champions League derby.

Real Madrid is already focused on its upcoming Champions League quarterfinal tie against Arsenal. However, the second leg against Atlético Madrid continues to generate controversy.

UEFA focuses on Real Madrid players

The organization has opened an investigation into the behavior of several Real Madrid players after qualifying at the Metropolitano. Among the main suspects are Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Dani Ceballos, and Vinícius Jr.

« A UEFA Ethics and Discipline Inspector has been appointed to investigate allegations of indecent conduct by the Real Madrid CF players (Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, Daniel Ceballos Fernández, and Vinícius Júnior) during the UEFA Champions League round of 16 match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Real Madrid CF on March 12, 2025. »

The investigation focuses on their celebrations in the Real Madrid fan zone. Despite not being called up to the squad, Ceballos was also present at the celebrations.

One of the most scrutinized aspects is Rüdiger’s gesture of placing his hand around his neck. UEFA will examine whether this gesture constitutes provocation toward the opposing fans.

Another of those under investigation is Kylian Mbappé. The images show the Frenchman making a gesture toward his genitals, which could lead to a disciplinary sanction.

Vinicius is another player under surveillance. According to UEFA, he had confrontations with the fans before and after the match. Vinícius Jr, after having to endure all kinds of disrespect, placed his coat on the ground to warm up, looked at the stands, and pointed at the badge, saying, « Here, here. »

Atlético de Madrid Complaint
During the last week, it has been leaked that Atlético sent a formal letter to UEFA. In it, the red-and-white club expresses its displeasure with the behavior of the Real Madrid players.

UEFA could impose fines or even suspensions if it deems provocation to have occurred. Real Madrid, for its part, maintains that its players only celebrated with their fans and had no intention of offending their opponents. The case remains open, and a resolution is expected in the coming days.
